Default How long will it take to start from scratch to get 10/20/30 HoM points (Proph + EotN)

Okay so well, I owned the original Guild Wars back from 2005, but I didn't get very far because my friend ditched me for WoW so I had no more friends to play with, and my Ranger wasn't strong enough to go solo and I ended up quitting at the Crystal Desert before even ascending.

However I am really hyped up for Guild Wars 2, and some of the HoM rewards do look quite attractive. I'm considering buying EotN so I can start earning HoM points. I doubt I'd buy Factions or Nightfall because I don't think I like the original game THAT much to spend so much more on it.

How long will it take me to start from scratch to achieve 10, 20 and 30 points? What class should I play if I'll probably be soloing most of the time? Do you guys think it's worth it?

Thanks.

Whether or not it's worth it is up to you - if you enjoy the game, then do it! If not, it doesn't really hinder you in GW2, since all the rewards are aesthetic only (armour, pets, titles etc.)

As for attaining 10/20/30 points, it can be racked up very, very quickly.

This is a pretty good guide for 30/50

It does say you need all 4 campaigns in this guide, but just pick and choose as you wish.

As for character, if you're just casually playing for points, any character will do.

You'll probably struggle a little bit without Factions and Nightfall. By my estimation, you'll only be able to get 6/8 points from Resilience (armor), 6/8 Fellowship (heroes & pets), and you'll only be able to add 22(ish) PvE Honor statues, for 8 points. Some of those would take a long time without the shortcuts the other campaigns afford you (Lucky/Unlucky). The PvP statues might be tough to get, since your build options will be limited. Ditto for farming -- your options may be limited by your builds. You'll be forced to buy a lot of stuff you don't have natural/easy access to: Green & gold minis, tormented weapon, etc. And though Devotion (minipets) and Valor (weapons) can be maxed (8 points each) if you throw enough money at them, you'll need a way to make that money.

Is it possible to do before GW2 comes out (likely 6 months to a year from now)? Yeah, if you really grind. But I think you'd have a much easier and more enjoyable time if you had all the campaigns. Keep an eye on STEAM, etc., for Holiday deals. The sets can be gotten pretty cheaply, and if you enjoy the game at all, I think it would be worth the investment.

Not in his circumstance, it can't. At the moment, he's got Prophecies only, and stopped playing before ascending. Which means he's probably got 10-15 hours of total game time. In order to accumulate points quickly, he'd need a boatload of cash for minis, "Valor" weapons, and hero armor. And without NF and Factions, a fair chunk of the points aren't attainable at all.

My recommendation would be to try to find the Trilogy and EotN cheap. They're out there if you look - I found a copy of EotN for 5 bucks.

If you're determined to just go with Proph and EotN, I don't think there's any way for you to get all the GW2 unlocks in a decent amount of time. You'd have to depend on getting *all* the points available to you, which would mean accumulating most of the Tyrian/EotN titles as well as adding the available weapons to "Valor" and pets/heroes to "Fellowship". It's do-able, but it won't be easy or quick by any means.

Like others said, getting 30 points without Factions and Nightfall is going to be really hard :
-no legendary titles
-less heroes (devotion can't be maxed)
-cannot buy kurz/lux and vabbian armors (resilience can't be maxed)
-a lot less skills, so you won't be able to do a lot of farming builds, so no good way to get a lot of money, so even luck won't be enough to get enough minipets and buy a tormentor weapon. Also, since you don't have access to those skills, you may have a hard time doing some missions/Elite areas and finding a group.

For what it costs, you can buy the trilogy.

If you still have access to your account then you may be lucky enough to have some rare minipets which could be sold to help you get the points you need.

Just make sure you price check them first.

aelesia, reading your post brought back memories of the Crystal Desert. It was danged near impossible to finish on my first character. I remember people in my guild quiting GW about that point. Back at the start of GW that area was HARD.

A few things have changed since you quite GW. First of all, the missions are not as hard as they once were. With the advent of Hard Mode the normal mode missions were toned down a little.

Secondly, some of the skill changes have benefited players greatly, also making some missions a bit easier.

Third, with the wiki almost totally complete it is far easier to find the information you need to complete the mission.

I would just say give the game another try with your old ranger. Read up on some builds for your character that will help you become more powerful and see if the game is now fun for you. If it is, then I would highly suggest Nightfall as you can get customizable heroes to add to your party. They are far and above most henchmen. You can also get some heroes in Eye of the North but I still recommend Nightfall.

Titles would seem to be the most difficult to get in a short time but yes you should be able to get to 30 points without too many problems.

If you didn't delete your original character or characters there will be a few birthday minis awaiting you which count in the hom.

"Devotion" You should easily get 3 points for minis if you can get 20 minis that's another 2 points.

"Fellowship" 1 animal companion 1 rare companion and and elite armour on 3 heroes gets to 5 points.

"Honor" this is where you add titles and with just the two games your limited here. but you could probably add a few points possibly 6 points pretty quickly, check out the hom calculator on the gw2 web page and see what you think is possible for you.

"Resilience" 5 elite armours gets you 5 points 7 gets you another 1 point.
Thats all down to how much money you can make as your talking 60 to 75 k plus materials per armour.

"Valor" here you add Destroyer Oppressor and Tormented weapons some of these you might have to buy as you don't have the games to get them yourself, but 3 points here is pretty easy.

I recon you would be on 20 to 23 points before you start to really have to work for points.
If you could get a game or 2 completed, vanquished and mapped and threw in a pvp title that would get you to 30 points for sure.

You do have 6 months at least before gw2.

To be honest with you, I think you'd be NUTS to be willing to invest the time in filling your HoM without getting all the games. You're talking about $10-$15 on top of what you already have/are willing to get vs. a time investment of MANY MANY hours to get anything like a decent points total. The extra games give you skills, heroes, quests etc which all help towards HoM.

I would buy Factions and Nightfall. You'd be selling yourself short if you didn't, especially since they aren't $50 each anymore. I think you're better off investing the $10-$35 since you'd make that in a day in just about any job, versus having to grind reputation instead of getting hero armor and such.

Things you would be shorthanded on:
You'd need to drop 20e+ on a Tormented weapon.
You'd need to make up for all the points for missing more than half the heroes (and MOX). You'd also be missing the Black Moa, Imperial Phoenix. With armors at about 10k for heros, this is the cheapest monument to max.
You'd need to make up for missing 2 points in Luxon/Kurzick armor and Vabbian, replacing it with the awfully expensive Obsidian armor.
You'd miss the Legendary Guardian, Cartographer, and Vanquisher titles from the start.
Many team builds need the skills from Factions/Nightfall. Good luck getting a group.

Looking for prices for you, currently.
Factions is 12.99 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ELW4D6/...N=B000E LW4D6

Trilogy is 38.73 http://www.amazon.com/Guild-Wars-Tri.../dp/B001DI6O6C

Should be lower around Black Friday or after Christmas.

Historically you can get each one for ~10 dollars and trilogy for 20: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthr...id=0&t=2135366 ; http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthr...id=0&t=2249117 ;

first of all, if you still have that ranger who languished in the desert all this time, he should have some nice birthday gifts you can add to your HOM...

as has been said it will be more difficult to do some of the monuments, but you should be able to get 30 points without the other 2 chapters IF you want to spend the time and money doing it.

Firstly the weapons and minis can be completed without ANY of the other chapters (since you have eye and prophecies you will be able to do WiK and get the oppressor weapons--and eye will give you the opportunity to get the destroyer ones--you can buy a tormented weapon if you desire)

so 2 monuments you can max well without all chapters

heroes--will be harder to max, but you can still get points for your eye heroes (and if you ascend you can cap a black widow on your ranger too)....

armor will be harder, but you have access to more than 5 sets with both eye and prophecies---and FoW if you get the mats.....but no kurzick/luxon or vabbian armors

the honor monument will be hard if you want to get lots of titles---this will be where you have to decide things. You will be able to get protector and guardian of tyria, carto of tyria and skill hunter of tyria....you can get the sweets/drunkard/party titles and well as the eye titles (asuran, norn, ebon and master of the north)... etc

the hardest part will be your lack of good skills---without the other 2 chapters you are at a big disadvantage (and you wont be able to change the skills of your heroes --sin, rit, paragon or dervish)

how much time it will take to get to 10...if you have the minis and some plat to get your first elite armor (and if your ranger has a level 20 pet), not too long, 20 and 30 will take some time

my suggestion would be to finish up prophecies with your ranger (but get heroes from eye first) ...that way you have one 'title' already...do the bonuses for all the missions in prophecies (if you do not have them completed) and get a set of elite armor. Head over to eye and do the farming for max titles there (and another armor). Then you can work on WiK and getting destroyer weapons.....if your pet is not level 20 level it up, get to the UW and cap a spider (for another 'hero').....

that should get you up to 10 easy and on your way to 20 (but you should think about getting the other 2 chapters it will make it easier---and you can usually find some bargains on the trilogy about now---)

hope this helps

aelesia, just getting points for HoM is a waste of your time. Go play a game you like. GW is like you remember only except worse probably.

Two weeks after GW 2 comes out nobody will care about the GW 1 vet items. They are purely appearance items. They give no advantage of any kind. HoM points are mostly to give existing GW players something to do.

Now get back to Cataclysm and have fun!

If you still have your ranger from 2005, check prices for minis on guru and sell your 3,4,5th year minis (and 1th and 2nd if they are not white). You'll get quite a lot of money to start with (you can later buy 1st year white minis for hom for ~5k each from players). This will help you progress faster.

And you'll get 3 HOM points just from having all 3 games

Good luck!
